2 Kings 4:8-16
My pastor preached this message, last year and I wanted to share it on TERC. The premise of the message was on this lady who was a very kind person that did for everyone but herself. A lot of us get so wrapped up in being busy caring for others or fulfilling what our parents planned for us that we forget some of the things we dreamed for ourselves.
One of the reasons why you could forget your dreams is because you see so many obstacles in your path, you cannot imagine getting to that dream place from where you are currently. In verse 14, Gehazi told Elisha the reasons why it was impossible for the woman to have a child. In Exodus 4:29-31 we see the Israelites filled with hope and joy at the message Moses brought to them about their freedom but in the next chapter, when pressure came they gave up and blamed their problems on God's promise.
It could also be because of something you did in your past that cause others around you to say it is impossible for that dream to come to pass. In Acts 9:18-21 we see people talking about Paul, the one who prosecuted Christians and finding it hard to imagine him converting to being sold out for God. So maybe you had a low g.p.a. in undergrad, you think because of that no law school will offer you admission.
Finally, when you have been disappointed many times before, it can be very hard to believe again, so in order to protect yourself from disappointment you choose to forget about that dream. As was the case with the lady in the passage (2 Kings 4:15). But verse 16 shows that God never forgets. He used Elisha to bless her with her child. What God has destined for you will come to pass one way or another. So we have to be sure that we do not sabotage God's will for our lives. If the lady had not been kind to Elisha, she would never have gotten the opportunity to have those conversations with him. Matthew 6:33 says seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all other things shall be added unto you. She took care of God's prophet and God took care of her.
2 Kings 4:1-7 especially verse 2: Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?”
When God wants to fulfill a dream for you, He will always work with where you are. What do you have to start with? What do you have in your hand? What talents has He already given you that you make use of? The rest of the passage shows the Shunamite woman doing exactly what Elisha instructed her to do. As long as you are obedient to the Word, your dream will happen.
As children of God, our steps are ordered by God (Psalms 37:23) So if you have a dream that you had forgotten, start asking God to order your steps to lead you to the path of accomplishing that dream and don't let the pressures of life get in the way (2 Corinthians 4:16-18). And most importantly, don't put limitations on what God can do for you. If He promised, He will do it (Hebrews 10:23)
